ZED Champions features innovative new racehorse attributes and behaviors, seamless hands-free racing, and real-time community connections around rising and legendary stars. For those who prefer to watch, spectators can join the action too, and it’s just as captivating.

ZED Champions is a game that redefines digital horse racing, inviting you to build and manage your stable, strategize for success and earn real money rewards by racing your horses and participating in auctions.

The game features an exclusive racing pool of 4,320 horses that are automatically entered into races based on their current standing on the leaderboard. In each race, horses stake up to 10% of their internal $ZED balance. Matchmaking (MM) points and $ZED Token ($ZED) are earned based on race results. Each race consists of eight horses, matched according to their MM points.

Each racehorse has an internal $ZED balance determined by its breed price and race performance. This balance also plays a role in determining whether a horse faces forced retirement from the racing pool as it increases or decreases after each race.

You can also choose to retire your racehorse after a race, earning real money rewards in the form of the remaining $ZED Token in that horse’s balance.

The core of the ZED Champions ownership and breeding game is discovery. The game is designed to actively communicate and support this discovery loop wherever possible.

Progression in this game hinges on information - learning which horses are good, understanding their characteristics and using that knowledge to breed strategically or retire them at the optimal time for maximum rewards.

The information provided about each horse will emphasize this process of discovery. Whether your horse wins or loses, every race offers a new opportunity to learn more about its capabilities. In ZED Champions, knowledge is your most valuable resource.

Game Overview

Each horse in ZED Champions has a number of public and secret attributes that will influence its racing performance. These attributes are determined by breeding mechanics and can be further enhanced by augments (which are discussed later in the Guide).

 (Nakamoto, Szabo, Finney, Buterin) - each bloodline has its own attributes influencing racing performance and breeding potential.

Well it wouldn’t be a secret if we told you now, would it? There are some secret horse attributes that you can discover to optimize your breeding strategies.

In addition to its attributes, a horse’s performance is determined by several key systems. These systems help define how well a horse competes in races and evolve as the horse participates in events:

 General rating for the horse’s capabilities. Available immediately.

 How fast the horse runs. Available after 5 races.

 A combination of how long and fast the horse sprints down the stretch. Available after 10 races.

 Reflects how each race impacts the performance of the horse. Available after 15 races.

Analyze each race performance to uncover strengths and weaknesses, gaining valuable insights to inform your strategy.

Horse Attribute & Performance

 in ZED Champions allows you to create new racehorses by pairing a Stud (male) and a Mare (female) horse in the Stud Marketplace. Horses are on-chain NFTs, so the breeding process will mint a new offspring NFT.

To be eligible for breeding, both horses must meet the following criteria:

Have at least one available breeding slot

Horses start with a default number of breeding slots based on their generation: (5 - generation, with a minimum of 0 slots). Each time a horse is bred, one breeding slot is consumed.

If a horse runs out of slots, additional breeding slots can be unlocked using Forge Tokens, up to a maximum of 10 total breeding actions:

Generations 0–5: 1 Forge Token per slot.

 retired horses but may also be granted as static rewards. Strategic management of breeding slots and Forge Tokens is essential for building a competitive stable. 

The Stud Marketplace is the exclusive hub for breeding new horses in ZED Champions. It is also the only way to enter a new horse into the racing pool.

An auction is automatically created for each stud when it enters the Stud Marketplace. Only the stud’s owner can list it for breeding. 

When the stud is entered into the marketplace, one of its breeding slots is spent. 

if the stud auction doesn't settle and expires, the horse will get it's unused breeding slot back but not if the auction is cancelled early by the owner.

Mare owners can bid on a Stud Auction by selecting a Mare to pair with the chosen Stud and specifying a price in $ZED Token. To place a bid, the following conditions must be met:

The Mare must be eligible for breeding. 

The bid must be above the minimum price. The bid amount must be a multiple of 10 $ZED. 

Each new bid must exceed the current maximum bid.

When a bid is placed, one of the Mare's breeding slots is reserved for the potential offspring. For example, a Mare with five unspent breeding slots can participate in bids across five active studs simultaneously.

Bids cannot be decreased or canceled, but they will automatically expire after 72 hours if the auction is not settled. 

After the bid is placed, the bidder can increase their bid at any time, which will reset the auction’s expiry timer.

To simplify the process, you can enable automatic bidding. Auto bidding allows you to select a pre-set maximum bid amount when outbid.

The system will automatically increase your bid by the base amount whenever you are outbid, up to the maximum limit.

This feature ensures you remain competitive in auctions without needing to monitor them constantly.

You can instantly breed by paying 3x the balance of the lowest-ranked horse on the racing pool Balance Leaderboard (also known as the 'Buy Now' price). This process will force the lowest-ranked horse to retire, and the new horse enters the racing pool at the start of the next round.

Example: The lowest horse on the Balance Leaderboard has a balance of 200 $ZED Token. Any player who bids 600 $ZED Token on an eligible auction will instantly settle that auction and get a new horse that will enter the racing pool.

To be eligible for settlement an auction must have:

Once auctions are eligible, settlement is done throughout the day, starting with the highest-value bids and proceeding in descending order.

As the racing pool requires a fixed amount of horses, a suitable replacement must be identified from the racing pool before an auction can be settled. This ensures that the balance of horses in the racing pool is maintained at all times.

The process for settling auctions is as follows:

Select the top eligible auction (highest bid value)

Identify the lowest-ranked horse on the racing pool Balance Leaderboard as a replacement. The horse must be:

If neither condition is met, the process starts again from Step 1.

This cycle continues as long as there are eligible auctions and horses available for retirement.

Once settled, the Mare’s reserved breeding slot is consumed and a new offspring is minted, replacing the retiring horse.

Once the auction settles, the accepted bid fee is distributed as follows:

50% to the new foal’s starting $ZED Balance

The resulting foal inherits a mix of unique traits including public and private attributes, performance ratings, and color. All newly bred horses are automatically entered into the racing pool. 

The key to becoming the best stable is how well you can optimize your breeding strategies.

Breeding

The Racing Pool is a fixed size of 4,320 horses which are automatically entered into races according to their relative positions on the Matchmaking (MM) Leaderboard. Races are scheduled in rounds with a new race starting every eighty seconds.

The size of the racing pool, the races per hour and the number of gates in each race are easily configurable by adjusting the duration of each round. The initial configuration is as follows:

This configuration ensures a consistent and balanced racing schedule while allowing for adjustments as needed.

MM ensures every horse in the Racing Pool is fairly assigned to races. Each round lasts 12 hours, during which every horse competes in one race.

Horses are ranked on the MM Leaderboard in descending order based on points, and then assigned to races sequentially: 

The lowest 8 horses on the MM Leaderboard are put into Race One

The next 8 horses are put into Race Two, and so on. 

The top 8 horses compete in the final race of the round. 

After the completion of a round, all horses either move up or down the leaderboard which determines the MM for the next round.

 for wagering partners, spectators and players, scheduling for the next round begins before the current round ends.

This process starts at the end of each race. Scheduling begins at the bottom of the leaderboard until either:

There is a horse on or above 1,000 points (new horses start at 1,000 points)

There is a horse which is within 20 points of the lowest-ranked horse in the last completed race. (20 is based on the amount of points a horse loses for placing 12th).


This approach guarantees that the remaining races in the round don’t affect the current leaderboard standings and allows new horses entering the racing pool to race in the next round.

The system includes a configuration for the maximum number of races to pre-schedule and how many races must be completed in the current round before pre-scheduling begins. 

This gives you ample time to re-configure or retire your horses between races, providing flexibility and allowing for strategic adjustments before the next round.

The MM leaderboard is continuous and ranks all the horses currently in the racing pool.

On this leaderboard, all horses start on 1,000 points. Points are adjusted after each race based on the horse’s placement. Each finish position is assigned a fixed amount of points, from 1st to 8th place: [55,17,8,-6,-14,-17,-20,-23].

Horses are ranked primarily by points (descending), but if two horses are on the same points then the older horse ranks higher.

Racing

Approximately every two months a Season will end. Season shifts are where new features and adjustments come in, but are also provided time to look at and reflect on performance.   

In future seasons, stables will be able to earn rewards based on specific performance metrics (which may be changed each time to keep things interesting) and earn extra rewards.

Seasons

There are two ways a horse can be retired from the racing pool:

Voluntary Retirement: When its owner chooses to retire the horse. 

Forced Retirement: When the horse ranks lowest (out of the eligible horses) on the Balance Leaderboard and eligible Stud auctions are ready to be settled.

Before either can occur, the horse must be eligible for retirement. To be eligible for retirement, the following conditions must be met, the horse must:

Before a horse can retire (be removed from the racing pool), a replacement horse must be minted from the Stud Marketplace to maintain the racing pool size.

Retiring & Reforging Horses

Augments are performance boosts that can be equipped to improve a horse’s abilities during a race. Each horse starts with three augment slots and random common augments equipped.   

Augments come in different rarities and are collectable and tradeable. You can acquire augments through various methods, using them to improve your horses’ performances during races. 

Breeding a top-tier horse and equipping it with high-quality augments can be a powerful strategy for climbing the leaderboard and staying competitive.

The ZED Champions player economy is designed to keep you engaged and motivated by focusing on improving your racing horses. This not only enhances your performance in events but also earns you event rewards from the Reward Treasury.

You can increase the performance of your horses by breeding in the long term, and in the short term by 

: Careful breeding will not impact racing much in the short term, but will increase profitability in the future as the base value of horses in your stable improves

: Acquiring augments gives immediate performance boosts, and skillfully equipping them leads to competitive racing.

$ZED is the primary token used within ZED Champions for improving horses and participating in the ecosystem.

reZED is a non-tradable currency, interchangeable with $ZED, and granted as rewards to drive engagement.

These are the primary ways to spend $ZED within ZED Champions: 

You will need to spend reZED or $ZED to improve your racing stock and gain an advantage via skillfully equipped augments. Spending $ZED contributes to the Reward Treasury.

Augments

Breeding a great horse and rising to the top is the most obvious way to win rewards, but there are multiple ways to earn rewards in ZED Champions.

There will be a variety of rewards available for you to earn, and be granted, including:

Breeding Horses (any combination of breed, sex, and generation) 

Each week there will be straightforward tasks to complete, known as Bounties. Examples include: “Win X auctions” or “Place Top 3 X times”. 

A reward pool of reZED will be split among all winners for each Bounty. For instance, a Bounty is 10,000 reZED shared by seven winners means each player earns(10,000/7) = 1,429 reZED.

These are unannounced tasks with a fixed reward, to encourage you to explore, discover rewards and share them with the community! Examples include “Get last place in a race” or “Own a Deep Purple Nakamoto”.

As a special reward, you can earn non-currency rewards weekly based on the $ZED in their stable. This can include Augment packs or even breeding horses.

After Season 0 you will be rewarded based on the $ZED Balance in your racing pool portfolio. This box may contain things like Augments and Forge Tokens, but the exact contents will change each time.

Total rewards granted will be scaled based on the total volume of transactions.

Similar to weekly rewards, but on a larger scale and seasonal basis. In later seasons there will be a seasonal rotation of horses, where the low-balance horses in the breeding pool are retired and replaced (for free!) with Generation 0 horses.

Seasonal rewards will launch with weekly rewards after Season 0.

Live Operations and Rewards

ZED Champions has two main leaderboards - the Matchmaking (MM) leaderboard and the Horse Balance leaderboard. 

Ranks horses based on points and performance in the racing pool.

Determines race matchups and weekly rewards.

Ranks horses based on their current racing pool balance.

Identifies horses eligible for retirement or replacement.

Additional leaderboards with varying rules and rewards will provide you with more opportunities to compete and earn.

You can engage with these leaderboards passively using your Racing Pool horses or aim to compete high up the leaderboards by targeting them with specific actions, earning rewards such as augments and reZED.

Your in-game wallet is created automatically when you sign up for ZED Champions. You can copy your wallet address from your dashboard any time you need to fund it.

I’m a returning player. Where is my $ZED?

Any $ZED, reZED, and eligible horses you earned in rewards will appear in your ZED Champions dashboard

If you held $ZED on Polygon, you’ll need to bridge it to Base before it’s usable in-game

Do not send tokens from Polygon directly, bridging is required.

Already bridged? Your $ZED will show in the top-right corner of your dashboard when it arrives.

I don’t own any $ZED yet. How do I get started?

Here’s a basic overview for new players:

Buy ETH on a supported exchange (e.g. Coinbase)

Copy your wallet address from your dashboard

Once your transfer is confirmed on Base, your $ZED will be available for use in-game.

What is reZED? How is it different from $ZED?

reZED is a non-transferable in-game currency that mirrors $ZED 1:1. It stays locked to your account but can be used instead of $ZED for core features.

reZED helps you play more without always needing to spend withdrawable $ZED.

Funding Your Wallet 

Go to the Marketplace from your dashboard

Browse listings and check each horse’s bloodline, star rating, traits, and retirement status

Make sure your ZED Champions wallet is funded with enough $ZED

Click 'Buy' and follow the prompts to complete the purchase

If it’s a racing horse, it will enter the Racing Pool automatically.

If it’s retired or in the Breeding Pool, you’ll be able to list it in the Stud Marketplace. (If it has enough breeding slots - max is 10).

If a horse is queued for retirement, any remaining $ZED balance will transfer to the player who retired the horse, not the buyer. Check for the orange retirement banner in the top-right of the listing before purchasing.

How To List A Horse for Sale in the Marketplace

You can list any horse for sale as long as it’s not currently in an active auction.

If your horse is in an auction, you’ll need to remove it before listing.

If there are no bids, you can remove your horse from auction at any time, but doing so uses up one of its breeding slots. To avoid that, you’ll need to wait for the auction to expire before listing it elsewhere.

If there is a bid, it must be outbid or the auction must settle before removal is possible.

Once removed, the horse can be listed in the Marketplace.

I bought a horse with a $ZED balance showing, why didn't I receive it?

If the horse was already retired or queued for retirement before your purchase, any remaining $ZED is returned to the player who retired the horse after its final race. Balances don’t transfer with the horse after retirement.

How can I tell if a horse is retired before buying?

Horses queued for retirement show an orange flag on their listing in the Marketplace. Always check this before buying, especially if you’re looking at balance or racing potential.

Can I benefit from buying horses with high balances?

You can build a strong stable by choosing horses with solid bloodlines and race history, but balances from horses queued for retirement won’t carry over. Those funds go back to the player who retired the horse to prevent unintended gains.
